Letting go of grudges, bitterness and anger
To think that one’s life will be void of disappointments hurts and wrongdoings is very unrealistic! Paul, who faced unbelievable injustices and wrongdoings, is assuming everyone will face injustice by his writings in Romans 12.
Rom 12:17 (ESV) Repay no one evil for evil but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all, 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, For it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”
- Who is eligible to receive pay back from us?
- What does he mean by give thought to do what is honorable?
- What is the alternative to paying someone back who has wronged you?
It seems like a difficult thing to not repay those who do us wrong.
“FOR” (it is written) here is the reason we can do that! It is written, it’s in the bible and the bible is true! God says I will repay and we can trust that! Punishment is not ours to pick up its God’s, SO LAY IT DOWN!!
This promise is to help us overcome that pressure we feel to take up vengeance for ourselves.
Never avenge yourself. Someone may have lied about you and you lost your job. Maybe you’ve been sexually taken advantage of or someone you love disappointed you. Maybe you’ve been abused or even something as little as rolling their eyes or not saying thank you. Big or small God wants our hearts free of the bitterness of vengeance, judgment and un-forgiveness
We are more loving when we trust Him with vengeance!
By holding people in judgment and taking up vengeance we continually feel the pain of the wrong that was done to us. When we forgive and leave it with God we are free of it!
You could’ve been done wrong years ago and it still affects you today because you’ve chosen judgment for that person instead of mercy! You keep the pain when you keep the judgment, when you forgive you give it away!
Ephesians 4:31-32 (ESV) 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Remember we are following one who died for His enemies. Jesus stayed on the cross and didn’t retaliate. We all can be redeemed because of His great love and mercy.
INSTEAD OF PAYING THESE PEOPLE BACK THAT BEAT HIM, SPIT ON HIM AND BETRAYED HIM, JESUS WAS JUDGED AS IF HE WAS THE ONE WHO DID THESE THINGS!! IT’S THE OPPOSITE OF VENGEANCE, NOT ONLY DO WE BENEFIT BUT ITS FOR OUR EXAMPLE.
Choose today TO FORGIVE and lay down bitterness and vengeance. As you release these people from judgment and leave it with God, you’ll begin to walk in a new freedom!
