James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Even after we are born again we must realize that there are provisions only God can make.  The process of growing up spiritually demands that we rely on this provision, especially when it comes to wisdom.

  • What exactly is James telling us to get?

Wisdom is not a collection of knowledge or information. Just because you’ve gathered a vast amount of information doesn’t make you wise. This includes Bible knowledge. Knowing every fact there is about God and the bible doesn’t make you wise.  Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge.  It is the ability to put Bible knowledge to work in our lives.

  • What is wisdom?
  • Should we be consumed with attaining knowledge?
  • Should our focus be putting our knowledge into practice?

Knowledge understands the traffic light has turned red, wisdom applies the brakes!

The bible wasn’t written under the influence of American culture. This command must be fulfilled by asking God and growing day by day in life with God’s help or it can’t be fulfilled at all.  The plea to get wisdom and get it from God is for everyone at every age at every stage in life. Man’s institutions can’t monopolize that! Education is a blessing but it pales in comparison to getting wisdom/insight from God.

Receiving is contingent on believing not wanting.  I want this thing so I believe God will deliver even though I don’t trust Him in other areas of my life I trust he’ll give me what I want.

  • What is the difference between wanting and believing?
  • What must we maintain as our hope and joy?

Faith isn’t acknowledging He’s real, faith is trusting God with our lives.  Faith is God’s chosen channel to bring his saving, strengthening, healing, and delivering grace to the world.  Jesus said through faith nothing is impossible – it is the greatest superpower available to anyone.

  • Do we have the right perspective of what God’s wisdom is and how to get it?

It’s a problem to believe that you are a disappointment to God, I was so shaped by winning peoples approval as a kid that I couldn’t grasp unconditional love. My faith towards God was hindered by unbelief! Wisdom will come and many other Godly gifts will come but we need to have faith in Him as a father who gives good gifts to his children.  God is pleased when I know I will be welcomed by Him!  I can’t win God’s approval.  I’m not going to feel close or come boldly feeling welcomed when I’ve been living in a way that He doesn’t desire

  • If we feel as if we disappoint God will our faith work?
  • How easy is it to be close to someone whom you feel is upset with you or you have disobeyed?
  • What is the only true source of wisdom?

Who are we looking to for wisdom? What is our source for wisdom? Is it the research of man, or our own thinking?  If our lives are shaped by reasoning that is coming from any place but God we are not living according to the divine plan that God has set forth for us.  If you’re building your life and family without the wisdom of God, it’s like building on sand, but a wise man builds on the Rock.

Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways

Any other source we hope to achieve wisdom from is pitiful next to the depth of God’s wisdom.  Not being guided by God’s will and principles will cause us to subjectively judge right and wrong.  What is right according to society constantly changes.  Look at how fast morality changes in society.

  • How has the breaking of morality from wisdom and knowledge in our culture effected our culture?
  • What is the reason for us to get wisdom from God?

Godly wisdom and insight is living with the awareness of the will of God! We can have joy during trials because we know God has a goal in mind.  Having wisdom will protect us from pitfalls and trendy detours

  • What are the consequences of building our lives on un-Godly wisdom?
  • What is the result of us not having wisdom from God?
